AstraZeneca said Friday it will begin airing its generic version of Pfizer's blockbuster arthritis drug Celebrex in March.
"We are very excited about this launch of Celebrex," said Dr. Reddy's president and chief operating officer, Mike McKinnell.
Pfizer, the world's biggest drug maker, is already airing its generic version of the arthritis drug on TV, in the wake of a patent expirations decision.
Celebrex, which contains the active ingredient Celecoxib, was first approved in 1998 for the treatment of arthritis and pain associated with osteoarthritis.
The drug is used to treat two forms of arthritis and to help prevent the worsening of arthritis.
The FDA had approved Celebrex for use in adults and children between the ages of 18 and 64.
Pfizer also said the drug was available in capsule form on the drugstore's website.
The company said the decision to begin airing the drug in March would "increase the number of patients that are ready to take the drug" and will be available to doctors and patients through March 15.
Celebrex had already been available on television and the Food and Drug Administration has said the label is not required for the drug's use in children.
The drug was first sold by AstraZeneca in 1999, and since then, more than half a million patients have taken the drug since 1998.
